The Three Conversations We Have With Founders, Over and Over Again

At Flexworks Advisors, these are usually the first conversations we have with a founder, not the hundredth. The only difference is whether we have them early, while it's still simple to fix, or later, once something's already broken and unwinding it costs time and money you didn't plan to spend.

1. "Are you compliant, or just hoping you are?"

It shows up early, usually around hire number four or five, right when offering health insurance stops being optional and "we'll figure out 401k later" quietly expires. It rarely stops there. Quarterly estimated tax payments. State nexus the moment someone gets hired across state lines. Sales tax obligations that appear without warning as revenue grows. R&D credits nobody claimed because nobody knew to ask. Most of it surfaces because a founder assumed their bookkeeper had it covered, and bookkeeping was never built to catch it.

2. Cash in the bank ≠ runway

Cash in the bank is a snapshot. Runway is a forecast: what's committed, what's coming, and what's actually available. It's one of the most important numbers in your business, which means it's worth getting exactly right. That's our job: making sure you always have the fully reconciled version, not an educated guess.

3. "Who's actually supposed to be doing all of this?"

This is the reality underneath the other two. A bookkeeper isn't a controller. A controller isn't a CFO. Most growing companies need a blend of all three at different points, sometimes in the same quarter, which is exactly what Flexworks is built to flex across. You did exactly what you were supposed to do. This part was always meant to be someone else's job.

These three conversations aren't a sign something's wrong. They're the reason Flexworks Advisors exists. We built this service inside General Inception because we wanted our own portfolio companies to have someone to call when these questions came up, and we've had them with more than 40 portfolio companies along the way.

Finance was never supposed to be the founder's job. Flexworks Advisors steps in and takes it on. No full-time hire required. If any of these three conversations feel overdue, let's have them before they cost you more than a phone call.

It's a lot easier to grow with the right people next to you.
